Abstract
This research focuses on the microstructural and mechanical characterization of the 5083-7075 friction stir welds, with emphasis on the impact of tool geometry. The applied tools were consisted of a spiral shoulder and three different pin geometries: threaded taper, Whorl and Triflute. For the specified FSW parameters, all pins successfully produced defect-free welds with satisfactory quality and properties. Pin geometry significantly affected the material intermixing, the size of the weld area, and weld strength. The Whorl pin facilitated the most consistent and accurate material mixing, while the joint produced with the Triflute pin exhibited the highest tensile strength.
