Abstract
The main product of calcium aluminate C(3)A (3CaO(.)Al(2)O(3)) hydration in the presence of calcium sulphite hemihydrate (CaSO(3)(.)0.5H(2)O), at the molar ratio of substrates close to 1, is the so-called monosulphite aluminate phase C(3)A(.)CaSO(3)(.)11H(2)O. Addition of small amount of calcium sulphite to calcium aluminate not only changes the rate of C(3)A hydration but also affects the course of reaction after consumption of calcium sulphite. The reaction of C(3)A with significant excess of calcium sulphite results in monosulphite aluminate phase formation at the beginning of reaction. The mixture of phases formed during reaction and the excess of calcium sulphite is presumably stable even after some days. But when the same reaction is performed in calcium hydroxide solution, the disturbances of stability of reaction product is observed. Monosulphite aluminate phase and excess of calcium sulphite disappear after longer period of time, usually more than 7 days. The phase which composition is close to ettringite (but of different structure) appears. The investigation of C(3)A hydration, particularly the studies of processes occurring in the liquid phase were carried out with the use of conductivity equipment.
