Abstract
The global energy transition has spurred interest in natural hydrogen exploration, with soil gas analysis offering valuable insights. Poland provides a unique opportunity, as nearly 12,000 soil gas measurements from past hydrocarbon exploration or environmental studies are available. This dataset was reexamined to assess hydrogen distribution, origins, and links to geological structures. Samples were collected across Paleozoic basins of the East European Craton, the Permian-Mesozoic Polish Basin, the Sudety orogen, and the Outer Carpathians with their foredeep. Hydrogen concentrations ranged from trace levels to 2.3% by volume, with the highest values recorded in the Variscan intra-mountain basin of the Sudety orogen. Elevated median concentrations were also observed in the Sudety (35 ppm) and Lublin region (45.3 ppm), likely linked to migration along fault zones from deep sources. In contrast, in the Carpathian Foredeep, uplift of the Precambrian basement correlates with higher hydrogen levels, while thick Zechstein evaporites in W and SW Poland act as effective seals reducing hydrogen concentrations in soil gas.
