Abstract
Our previously reported Lippmann diagram for the Pb-chlorapatite solid-solution aqueous-solution (SSAS) system lacked experimental constraints from the data on aqueous batch equilibrium dissolution experiments. These data demonstrated that dissolution proceeds congruently under metastable (dynamic) conditions, rather than attaining true thermodynamic equilibrium – a behavior commonly observed for solid solutions with very low aqueous solubilities. The most important correction presented here is the reinterpretation of these data using an “equal-G curve” (EGC). Stoichiometric solubility product constants (logKst) calculated from aqueous solute activities originally published from the dissolution experiments can now be incorporated into the Lippmann diagram framework. These values plot along the EGC connecting the endmember solubility product constants, confirming stoichiometric saturation and congruent dissolution behavior. The thus revised Lippmann diagram enables prediction of solubilities over a wide compositional range for Pb-chlorapatite supergroup systems previously reported in the literature. This includes not only the mimetite (Pb5(AsO4)3Cl) – vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl) SSAS series of the original paper, but also the pyromorphite (Pb5(PO4)3Cl) – mimetite and pyromorphite – vanadinite SSAS series published earlier. Together, these datasets allow construction of a ternary Lippmann diagram incorporating an EGC surface bordered by experimental data. © 2026 Elsevier B.V.
