Abstract
High-entropy alloys are gaining attention due to their catalytic properties and electrochemical stability, surpassing conventional alloys. In this work, high-entropy alloys containing transition metals in groups 7 through 10 (Ni, Co, Fe, and Mn) and Ti and/or Al were oxidized in 1 M H2SO4 using the chronoamperometric technique. This results in the dissolution of their components and microstructure development. Differences in surface composition strongly influence the catalytic properties of alloys. Alloy containing Ti shows the best catalytic properties towards oxygen evolution and satisfactory properties and stability in methanol electrooxidation due to higher content of oxidized to reduced nickel form. The addition of Al increases catalytic activity in methanol electrooxidation, but with limited stability. Instead, adding both Ti and Al inhibits the catalytic performance in the methanol electrooxidation, as oxidation of Ni during chronoamperometric measurements is weak. The proposed approach can be a simple way to improve the catalytic performance of high-entropy alloys.
