Abstract
This study describes the abundant occurrence of brucite in the serpentinite quarry at Nasławice near Sobótka, Lower Silesia. The mineral appears mainly as fibrous crystals, resembling asbestos. Raman micro-spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses confirmed that the fibrous aggregates are composed of brucite (known as nemalite), enriched in iron. Brucite is accompanied by minor amounts of hydrotalcite, calcite and serpentine-group minerals. The formation of brucite is associated with low-temperature hydrothermal and supergene processes, including serpentinitization and dolerite alteration. The Nasławice serpentinite mine currently represents the largest known brucite occurrence in Poland, although it has no economic significance.
