Abstract
Prominent elements of inanimate nature were an important part of the environment for local communities and influenced the shaping of Polish culture. Geological objects were perceived as mysterious and were associated with various fictional stories or the supernatural world. A total of 145 known geosites of the Outer Carpathians in Poland were analysed - particularly rocky forms, springs, caves, mountains, and others - in terms of their significance to local legends. Attention was paid to the number of stories, their thematic diversity, their association with specific types of inanimate natural features, and the level of protection afforded to these geosites. The observations indicate that well-known geosites are linked to one or more legends. These legends are geomythological, geofolkloristic, or onomastic in nature. Most contain mystical elements, including supernatural forces believed to have creative powers. A common narrative also involves bandits and hidden treasures. Inanimate natural features played an important social role, serving as symbols of caution against breaking laws or as emblems of hope and lawfulness. Therefore, Carpathian geosites of geomythological significance were valued and preserved by local populations, however, they are currently only partially protected by law.
