Abstract
The paper presents the results of physical and mechanical tests of Carpathian flysch rocks of variable lithology, including sandstones, siltstones, shales and claystones collected from various tectonic units of the Polish Carpathians. The analyses comprised uniaxial compressive strength (Rc), tensile strength (Rt), Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) and Cerchar hardness index (CHI). The obtained results show strong positive correlations between Rc, Rt, CHI and CAI ( = 0.77–0.93), indicating that the type and composition of the cement are the main factors controlling the mechanical behaviour, whereas grain size plays a secondary role. The highest mechanical strength was observed in silica- and silica-carbonate-cemented sandstones and siltstones, and the lowest in clay- and clay-carbonate-cemented rocks. The Carpathian flysch represents a highly heterogeneous, rhythmically bedded rock complex. This variability results in significant differences in rock behaviour, even within a single tunnel section, requiring a detailed geological-engineering investigation supported by an extensive laboratory testing program. The obtained relationships form a basis for predictive modelling of flysch rock behaviour under mechanical excavation and for calibrating geomechanical classifications (RMR, Q, GSI) for tunnelling conditions in the Carpathians.
