Abstract

In the face of growing challenges related to climate change and air pollution, sustainable energy transition requires not only technological innovations but also social acceptance. This paper examines the perceptions of residents in Krzywcza (Poland) regarding energy transition processes and air quality, based on research conducted within the TANDEM (Transdisciplinary ANd Deliberative equity appraisal of transition policies in Energy and Mobility) project.Using a Citizen Science approach, the study engaged the local community in data collection and assessment of energy transition impacts on their daily lives. A panel study was conducted with 19 residents of Krzywcza, who participated in discussions and responded to survey questions regarding air quality, heating sources, and attitudes toward energy transition.Survey results highlight key factors influencing public acceptance of environmental policies, including social justice concerns, access to information, and the perceived effects of air quality on public health. The analysis reveals that residents demand a more inclusive decision-making process and greater transparency in energy transition policies. Economic concerns, awareness of air pollution risks, and trust in local governance significantly shape public attitudes toward energy transition.This paper emphasizes the importance of Evidence-Based Policymaking, where citizen-reported data serve as a foundation for developing and implementing environmentally sustainable strategies tailored to local realities. The study’s findings contribute to the discourse on Human-Centric Decision-Making, particularly by exploring the potential integration of IoT, Digital Twins, and other digital tools to enhance citizen participation in environmental policymaking.
