Abstract
The study on the usefulness and effectiveness of the bootstrap method and the Bayesian approach for determining sound power levels in real-life conditions was conducted using actual measurement data. The data used to illustrate the proposed methods and carry out the analysis comprised results of the sound power level obtained from the reference sound power source B&K 4205. This study determined the minimum sample size required to reliably estimate expected values using both statistical methods within the engineering method to determine sound power levels. Non-parametric statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by pairwise comparisons using the Tukey–Kramer test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results indicate that a minimum of five observations are necessary for the bootstrap method and four for the Bayesian method to obtain stable and accurate estimates. Compared to the sound power level determined using the precision method, the bootstrap estimator exhibited an average bias of 0.51 dB, while the Bayesian estimator had an average bias of 0.75 dB. In general, the analysis showed that the bootstrap and Bayesian methods produced statistically significantly different values of the sound power level.
