Abstract
A novel spinel (MgAl2O4)-based refractory ceramics were synthesized via hot isostatic pressing, solid-state route and liquid-phase-assisted sintering, and their thermal characteristics were investigated. Dense and porous spinel unmodified materials were synthesized via HIP and pressureless-sintering, respectively. The additives CaO, ZrO₂, and TiO₂ enhanced material densification through both the formation of a liquid phase and titanium doping. FactSage have been applied to simulate the evolution phases during sintering. Thermal conductivity of the HIP-material was 6.750 W/m∙K at 700°C, which was 4.5 times higher than that of pressureless-sintered porous ceramics (1.509 W/m·K). The chemically modified spinel dense ceramics exhibited enhanced insulating properties (4.935 – 5.815 W/m·K at 700°C), attributed to Ti doping, altered phase composition, modified grain boundaries, and the presence of point defects-all of which contributed to reduced phonon transport within the ceramic. The reduced thermal conductivity highlights the material’s potential for high-temperature applications requiring minimal heat loss from refractory linings.
