Abstract
In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem for a wave equation with variable-exponent nonlinear weak damping term and power-type nonlinearity. The model is used to describe diverse physical phenomena including flows of electro-rheological fluids, nonlinear viscoelasticity and image restoration. We establish the local existence theory. By constructing the potential well theory for the variable-exponent case, we obtain the sharp conditions for the global solution and the finite time blowup solution for the subcritical initial energy, and we also describe the asymptotic behavior of the global solution.
