Abstract
This study is focused on unveiling the mechanisms of incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles into the coating fabricated with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) of titanium of commercial purity from phosphate and silicate electrolytes. Detailed surface and microstructure analysis carried out with scanning and transmission electron microscopes, respectively, supported by EDS/XPS chemical and XRD/SAED phase analysis provided an explanation of the coatings growth and incorporation of ZnO-based material. These studies confirmed that for phosphate-based electrolyte the ZnO-NPs are fused to the upper surface of the MAO coating with amorphous zinc phosphate just beneath. On the other hand, the application of silicate-based electrolyte allowed to produce the material containing amorphous zinc silicate with ZnO-NPs dispersed throughout the cross-section of the coating. Different coating formation mechanisms have been confirmed. Phosphate-containing material is formed thanks to thermal decomposition of ZnO-NPs, ionization of Zn and reaction of Zn2+ cations with PO43- anions close to discharge channel at high temperatures. Silicate-containing coating is produced directly as a result of reaction between ZnO material with SiO2 melt.
