Abstract
This study examines the challenges posed by personalization algorithms on social media platforms, particularly the filter bubble effect. As algorithms curate content based on user behavior, they create echo chambers, limiting users' exposure to diverse viewpoints. The primary challenge addressed in this study is the need for more awareness among social media users, especially younger users, about the algorithmic mechanisms that shape their online experiences. To investigate this, the study utilizes Fisher's Exact Test and Cramér's V to assess the relationship between age group and social media usage patterns with users' awareness of filter bubbles. The results indicate that younger users (18-24 years old) are significantly more likely to be unaware of the filter bubble effect (p-value = 0.045, Cramér's V = 0.514). At the same time, the amount of time spent on social media does not significantly affect awareness (p-value = 0.087, Cramér's V = 0.363). These findings highlight a significant gap in digital literacy, particularly among younger generations, who are heavily engaged in personalized content consumption on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. To address this challenge, the study proposes a focus on digital literacy education to improve users' understanding of personalization algorithms, promote critical thinking, and encourage exposure to diverse content. The study also recommends that social media platforms implement algorithmic transparency and tools for content diversification to mitigate the risks of polarization and echo chambers. Future research should explore effective interventions that increase users' awareness of algorithmic influences and assess the long-term effects of filter bubbles on social behavior and decision-making.
