Abstract
The article organizes the chronological framework of the invention of photography and the development of the medium’s first technical phase, while also defining the meaning of the terms daguerreotype and photography. It briefly outlines the technical process of daguerreotyping based on nineteenth‑ century manuals for daguerreotypists. The text reconstructs the contemporary genealogical discourse of photography and – drawing on selected memoir accounts – revisits the reception of the new medium and its presence in the private iconosphere.
