Abstract
Purpose: The article responds to the recent Gallup report indicating a global decline in employee engagement. While Gallup’s Q12 tool is widely used, its conceptual accuracy is questioned by scholars and practitioners alike. This paper aims to clarify the concept of employee engagement, trace its evolution, and review the tools used for its measurement. Design/methodology/approach: This conceptual paper is based on a review of both domestic and international literature. It also includes an analysis of engagement measurement tools and content from professional online networks. Findings: To date, there is no universally accepted method for measuring employee engagement. The study emphasizes the importance of starting with a clear, operational definition of engagement to ensure consistent understanding across organizational levels. Practical implications: Organizations should prioritize fostering engagement among managers, who play a pivotal role in shaping engagement among their teams. Despite criticism, existing tools though imperfect remain useful when combined with efforts to improve workplace conditions. Originality/value: This article contributes to ongoing debates by highlighting the conceptual and measurement challenges of employee engagement. It aims to stimulate further research and encourage practitioners to refine engagement strategies based on a better understanding of causal relationships.
