Abstract
Miocene deposits are widespread in the Carpathian Foredeep in Poland (the northernmost part of Central Paratethys). The Poreba Zegoty XXV/25 borehole is located about 25 km on the west from Kraków in the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The profile of Miocene deposits in this borehole includes the Klodnica and Skawina Formations. The Skawina Formation sediments are represented by grey and ash-gray claystones slightly brecciated in places. Micropalaeontological studies were conducted on the Skawina Formation deposits, from which eight samples were taken. The obtained material consists mainly of foraminifera, and in samples from the lower part of the profile it also contains bolboforms and ostracods. Two species of bolboforms were identified: Bolboforma moravica Redinger and B. reticulata Daniels & Spiegler. Bolboforma are rare in a fossil record of the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep in Poland and this is the first report of the Bolboforma moravica in this region. Presence of these two species allowed for the determination of the age of the studied deposits as the Middle Badenian sensu Hohenegger et al., 2014 and the Upper Bolboforma reticulata Zone sensu Spezzaferi & Rögl, 2004. The foraminiferal assemblages co-occurring in the all studied samples indicate the same age and the Praeorbulina glomerosa–Orbulina suturalis Zone sensu Cicha et al. 1975. Presence of Bolboforma indicates quiet sedimentation of deep shelf zones (50-200 m depth) of Skawina Fm. deposits. The ostracod assemblage consists mostly of psychrospheric forms: Henryhowella asperrima (Reuss) and Krithe sp., which indicate deep and cold waters of the lower shelf zone (ca. 100-200 m depth) as the Skawina Fm. deposits sedimentary environment.
