Abstract
In this paper, a plug-and-measure type planar microwave agri-sensor for honey adulteration detection is studied to maximize its sensitivity and minimize per-unit cost. The sensor is realized as a differentially-fed interdigital capacitor with arced-shaped fingers on a circular footprint to accommodate honey's spill-out pattern. As a result, multiple resonances are present in its response while low-frequency ones exhibiting good matching are used for sensing. A 3D-printed snap-on container holds the necessary honey volume over the sensitive region. Four different layouts are developed and fabricated on a budget FR4 laminate featuring first resonance in the 1 GHz to 2 GHz range. A separable card edge connector interfaces the sensor through a guide transformer with the measurement instrument. Sensors response to pure lime honey and a mixture of lime honey and cooking syrup is measured, sensitivity is established and performance is evaluated.
