Abstract
Environmental hazards linked to sea transport have a significant impact on safety, operational efficiency, and ultimately, global trade. For instance, oil spills from ships pose a persistent threat, with individual vessels capable of discharging hundreds of tons of oil in a single incident. This research assesses environmental hazards and dangers and proposes enhancement strategies to reduce them and boost resilience and sustainability through explainable AI (XAI), which promises to increase safety in the sea transport industry. Sea vessels emit over a thousand tons of CO2 annually, along with sulfur emissions contributing to acid rain. Traditional AI models have demonstrated efficacy in predictive analytics for environmental risk assessment; however, their opaque nature limits interpretability and trust. XAI demonstrates enhanced transparency and performance in detecting environmental and other hazards, empowering the operators in sea transport to make informed decisions regarding fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, and risk prediction. The findings highlight the potential of XAI in enhancing regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability within the sea transport sector.
