Abstract
Chemical doping of SrCoO3-δ (SCO) perovskite stabilizes its crystal structure and enhances its electrocatalytic properties toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at lowered temperatures. In this work, the role of Nb5+ (4d) and Ta5+ (5d) elements, having the same ionic radius but different electronegativity, is established in context of the structural properties, electrical conductivity, thermomechanical characteristics, and electrocatalytic activity of the (co-)doped SCO. Tuning of the content of dopants results in stabilization of the cubic Pm-3m structure at room temperature, improves thermomechanical properties, but causes the expected lowering in the total conductivity values, related to the decreasing amount of Co. Co valence state was investigated in detail using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and titration method. The presence of both doping elements enables achieving low polarization resistance, of 0.042 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, for the prepared SrCo0.8Nb0.1Ta0.1O3-δ air electrode. To minimize thermal behavior mismatch, composite cathodes with Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ (GDC) are introduced yielding improved mechanical stability at the interface.
