Abstract
This work investigates the integration of computational topology into predictive modeling of solid oxide cell anode behavior, focusing on how topological invariants of the microstructure can support degradation assessment, microstructure characterization, and performance prediction. Persistence diagrams were extracted and transformed into machine learning-friendly formats via persistence diagrams and persistence images using digital microstructural representations of real and synthetically generated microstructures. These representations enabled the training of neural networks capable of estimating polarization curves and key microstructural properties. The results indicate that topological data analysis encodes microstructure features crucial for electrochemical reactions but remain undetected by classical morphological metrics. The method offers a scalable approach to incorporating microstructural complexity into surrogate models, thereby bridging the gap between data-driven approaches and the physical reality of porous electrodes. This enables a deeper understanding of microstructure–function relationships and broadening machine-learning tools for energy materials research.
