Abstract
We have studied magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of EuFe2Al8 and EuRh2Al8 intermetallic compounds. The two compounds belong to the orthorhombic CaCo2Al8 structure type in which a number of rare-earth (RE) metal-containing systems were found to show strong magnetic frustration due to the arrangement of the moment-bearing RE atoms into a network that is topologically equivalent to the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. However, in EuFe2Al8 and EuRh2Al8 we find no sign of strong magnetic frustration. Both compounds show two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperatures (TN1 = 18 K and 13 K; TN2 = 12 K and 9 K for EuFe2Al8 and EuRh2Al8, respectively).
