Abstract
Educational institutions as well as policy makers in many countries are facing the problem of generally low public interest in science and pursuing a scientific career. Citizen Science creates possibilities for the general public to engage in research projects and support data collection or analysis. It is a useful tool for both scientific progress and strengthening interest in science among the public. There are numerous space-related CS initiatives, and, in this study, we wanted to investigate some of the factors that can potentially influence the intention to get engaged in them. The study found moderate intention to engage in CS was slightly higher among American citizens. In the American sample, men were more likely than women to intend to engage but this tendency was not visible in the Polish sample. Regardless of nationality, younger people are more interested in CS engagement than older participants. This effect is sustained even when controlling for education level but only among Polish citizens. Our results highlight the importance of including multiple demographic factors in analyses specifically when comparing data from different populations.
