Abstract
Fatigue cracks in metallic structures pose significant risks to structural integrity, necessitating accurate assessment methods. This study presents a vision-based approach for automatic fatigue crack visualization and assessment using high-speed camera recordings. The proposed method leverages the crack breathing phenomenon and motion analysis in the frequency domain to generate amplitude maps that highlight crack-related motion patterns. An automatic scoring procedure is introduced for crack tip localization, enabling assessment of crack propagation. The methodology is validated through experimental studies on a cantilever beam and an aircraft plate structure. The results show that the method is robust to surface imperfections and varying excitation conditions, offering a non-invasive and automated solution for crack assessment.
