Abstract
Multipath is one of the main error sources in GNSS observations. However, it can be used to study and characterize the surrounding environments through the Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR). Depending on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data recorder with a GNSS receiver, we can calculate the relative height of the reflector with respect to the GNSS antenna. The data for GNSS-IR can be collected using traditional geodetic instruments, low-cost receivers, or even smartphones that are capable of recording RINEX or NMEA files. Experience gained during the last decades shows that GNSS-IR provides promising results in various applications such as snow depth, soil moisture, and water level measurements. This review paper provides the theoretical background of GNSS-IR and its applications, followed by a conclusion organized into four different application areas.
