Abstract
This paper describes gabion structures and provides examples of their historical and contemporary applications. The factors that have a destructive effect on these structures are discussed. It is noted that the durability of a gabion is depends not only on its internal and external stability, but also on the quality of the stones used in it, especially when it forms a retaining structure in a land or water environment. Therefore, requirements and test methods for armourstone, specified in the PN-EN 13383-1:2003 and PN-EN 13383-2:2019-07 standards, are presented. Using the example of a gabion wall made of Carpathian sandstone blocks, it has been shown that failure to meet the above requirements will result in the disintegration of the stone and the progressive destruction of the entire structure.
