Abstract
This study investigates a scalable, off-grid, renewable energy system that uses anion exchange membrane hydrogen electrolyzers to produce hydrogen. The integrated components are a photovoltaic installation, a battery, a hydrogen electrolyzer, intermediate tanks to store the hydrogen that is transferred from the electrolyzer, and two stages of high-pressure compressors, which are used to boost hydrogen pressure in the composite tanks. Based on experimental and technical analysis, it was found that a scalable anion exchange electrolyzer integrated with the pneumatic high-pressure hydrogen compressor can be used as a way to develop seasonal hydrogen storage. An analysis of the impact of electricity needs for hydrogen production and hydrogen compression is also provided.
