Abstract
The Olkusz region (South Poland) is known for its centuries-old tradition of zinc and lead ore mining, which ended with the closure of the Olkusz-Pomorzany mine. The shutdown of its dewatering systems in late 2021 and the gradual restoration of the depression cone are causing changes in the qualitative and quantitative parameters of groundwater. Particularly vulnerable is the Triassic aquifer, which has been intensively dewatered since the mid-20th century due to the occurrence of Zn-Pb ores. To assess the ongoing changes, a baseline is needed, which can be the hydrogeochemical background. The result of this article is a defined hydrogeochemical background of the Triassic aquifer for the period before the dewatering of the Olkusz underground mines began. It was characterized based on over 100 analyses. The obtained concentration levels of the studied substances can be used to determine the impact of several decades of mine operations and their closure on the quality of groundwater. Conducting such activities is particularly important during intense climate changes and the prospect of a water crisis. However, it is crucial to differentiate between the hydrogeochemical background levels described in this paper and the natural hydrogeochemical background levels of the Olkusz region, given its long history of mining activity and hydrological disturbances, making it impossible to establish a baseline completely unaffected by anthropogenic changes.
