Abstract
The longwall mining system is the most commonly used system for coal extraction. One of the methods of its cost reduction is to use a gate twice, first as a maingate, then as a tailgate. However, the gate maintenance behind the longwall face is very difficult, and sometimes mining and geological conditions simply do not allow for maintaining the gate at all. This paper presents findings of the research on the operations in the maingate behind the longwall face in two Polish coal mines. The rock mass movements and supported loads were controlled by an automatic monitoring system. As standing support - roofbolting was used in both workings, the bolt stress meters and load cells on the roof frames were used. Additionally, the changes of stress in the rock mass were also monitored. The measurements showed the actual behavior of the rock mass and the support behind the longwall face, with relation to the support scheme and roof reinforcement, and helped to assess the stability of the gates. This type of research has not been often reported in the literature.
