Abstract
Diffusion of the sound field is a very important parameter in the overall assessment of the quality of the auditoriums and listening rooms. Sound phase diffusers are a very effective tool to provide sound diffusion, especially for small interiors like listening rooms. The most popular diffusers in listening rooms are those based on pseudo-random sequences like quadratic residuum diffuser QRD and primitive root diffuser PRD. They are effective in sound diffusion in the wide frequency range. On the other hand, QRD is not effective in reducing specular reflection. Some constructions based on PR absorb too much sound. What is more, both types were developed for a normal sound incidence, which makes them suitable for the back wall of the listening room (behind the listener). Frequently they are not sufficient for the side or front wall. In the paper sound diffusers dedicated to the most important location in the listening rooms are proposed. Based on the functions of the diffusers, optimization criteria were defined. The efficiency of the proposed structures was compared with the QR and PR diffusers, showing much better results, especially in the redirection of the sound from the specular reflection and in lower sound absorption.
