Abstract
Structural defects can impact the propagating ultrasonic wave via various physical mechanisms, generating high-order harmonics, side-bands or frequency shift in the signal spectrum. Presented paper examines the shear wave modulation transfer due to the wave interaction with the nonlinear contact interfaces. The analytical results based on the Harmonic Balance expansion, are compared with a numerical solution based on the Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA). To analyze the modulation transfer, two sources of the shear wave excitations are considered. First, a single frequency probing wave, and a second, referred as pumping wave which is a sine wave modulated by a one-order lower frequency signal. A local through thickness defect is modelled in a linear elastic medium. The propagating waves interact with the nonlinear frictional interfaces of a crack, causing a modulation transfer through the shear stick-slip movement of crack surfaces. The mechanism is numerically implemented as Coulomb friction formulation of crack surfaces behavior. The pumping and probing waves are excited simultaneously in the structure by a displacement uniformly distributed over the thickness of the plate. It is shown, that despite the symmetric characteristic of considered source of nonlinearity, the transfer of all orders of sidebands is observed.
