Abstract

Carbon dioxide, although present in insignificant quantities in the Earth's atmosphere, presents itself as one of the most important greenhouse gases. Global warming is one of the most important challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Rapid energy demand generate additional quantities of this gas. One way to eliminate some of it is through geological sequestration. One of its methods is storing the captured carbon dioxide in hard coal beds. At the same time as injecting CO2 into coal deposits, it is possible to extract methane. The whole process is known as ECBM. With CO2 storage along with simultaneous CH4 extraction, there are problems in the form of possible swelling of the deposit. In addition, the uncontrolled release of methane during its extraction can also intensify the swelling effect, which will translate into a chain reaction. The purpose of our study was to determine the dilatometric characteristics of hard coal in atmospheric mixtures of methane and carbon dioxide under isothermal conditions. The experiments carried out made it possible to determine the degree of expansion of coal depending on the concentration of methane in the gas mixture. The results show that the swelling of hard coal depends on the concentration of methane in the mixture and is directly proportional to it.
