Abstract
The results of a microstructural investigation of the Laves phase decomposition during annealing at 649 °C using analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy methods are presented. 3D imaging using the FIB-SEM tomography technique was used to analyze the morphology of the C14 (MgZn2) Laves particles and to visualize the spatial distribution of its decay products. The research showed that the Laves phase decays while annealing into other phases such as δ-Ni3Nb, α-Cr and secondary carbides. The results of the 3D analysis showed the complex morphology of the Laves phase precipitation and the spatial distribution of the precipitated Cr-rich phase particles. The δ phase had plate-like morphology nucleates and grew into the surrounding Laves phase that had a longer annealing time and continued to grow in the γ matrix. A high-resolution analysis of the δ/Laves and δ/γ interphase boundaries was performed.
