Abstract
This work investigates the potential conversion of waste glycerin (other names: glycerol, glycerine) from biodiesel production into lactic acid (LA). After biodiesel production it is necessary to manage wastes e.g. glycerine. Waste glycerin is metabolized by microorganisms from the Lactobacillus family. Waste glycerine was used as a substrate for cultivation of several lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Among the screened microorganisms, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, ATCC7469; Lactobacillus plantarum, ATCC 8014; Lactobacillus delbrueckii WLP677 was identified as the most promising producer of LA. Therefore, it could be demonstrated that glycerol is a promising raw material for the production of lactic acid and could serve as a feedstock for the sustainable largescale production of lactic acid.
