Abstract
Among all analytical methods, thermal analysis techniques are dedicated for studying the thermal behavior of biocomposites and biomaterials. In the biomaterials field, thermogravimetry is used mainly to determine the thermal stability, mechanism of decomposition, as well as additive content. On the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results, important information about the purity and phase transitions, such as characteristic temperatures, crystallinity degree, or processing temperatures, can be obtained. DSC analysis can also be used for evaluation of the bone cement-setting process and crystallization kinetics of the polymers used as a biomaterial. Dynamic mechanical analysis provides valuable information on creep, stress relaxation, stress–strain dependence, deformation, changes in structure and material shape, thermal simulation, and allows a comprehensive description of polymers used as biomaterials. In this chapter, selected aspects of the application of thermal analysis methods for the characterization of biomaterials will be presented.
