Abstract
Long running, often extensive, mining exploitation results in considerable change in water system. It results from the necessity of minimalization of water endangarment (practically every mine - open pit and underground - must be drained) as well as the changes in rock massif. There are new water systems being created. Mine water predominantly salt, is discharged into surface streams. The systemic changes of Polish economy and the situation on world markets coerce decisions of closing down of single mines or even whole mining basins. The main problem concerning closing down of mines is choosing the optimal method of cessation or mitation of mine drainage. The consequences that the preferred method of closing down may hare on the change of water systems in the region of mining exploitation should be predicted in advance. The chosen method of closing down must take into consideration safety conditions in still working mines, and not to cause further degradation of the environment.
