Abstract
Social work with people with disabilities in Poland today is facing new challenges that are forcing change in practices aimed at helping such people. They have been brought about by changes in legislation and ways of defining disability, which emphasise the empowerment and self-determination of disabled persons. As a result of these processes, expectations towards social workers and the help they provide for people with disabilities are also changing. Today, their activities focused on the disabled community cannot be limited only to improving the social situation among these people, but must also include actions that increase their opportunities for an active and independent life. New technologies can play a big role here; if applied properly, they can expand the possibilities of working with disabled persons.
