Abstract

Digestate from wastewater plants, with its high moisture content and organic origin is a good feedstocks for wet carbonization methods, which takes place in an aqueous environment. The dried, separated solid product was studied for its use as an energy application. Thus, wet torrefied materials were examined in terms of their fuel properties. The ultimate and proximate analysis, energy and mass yields, higher heating value and thermal analysis were determined. Combustion behaviour and activation energies of raw and wet torrefied digestates were estimated by three isoconvertional methods: Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa. In addition, the opaque, polluted liquid phase required purification, therefore, the preliminary study of vacuum filtration was applied. The liquid phase and its distillates, pH, BOD, COD, and conductivity were measured and compared.
