Abstract

In the sustainable concrete industry, it is possible to obtain environmentally friendly concrete by among others substituting the Portland cement with supplementary cementitious materials, which would work as a binder. A general approach of reducing the binder content in the concrete mix is also noted. In the study, the experiments were performed on an eco-efficient self-compacting concrete (Eco-SCC) mix of reduced binder content and containing fly ash. The behaviour of the Eco-SCC mixture was examined to determine whether it is suitable for multilayer casting. Normally, selfcompacting concrete should be placed continuously, however, it is not uncommon that contractors are forced to take breaks as a result of delivery delays. Casting the elements in multiple poorly prepared layers may cause the creation of cold joints between them. Two technological variants of multilayer casting of Eco-SCC on beam elements were analysed: placing the mixture from a minor height on the previously placed layer and placing the subsequent layer on the mechanically disturbed surface of the first layer. Four different delay times were applied: 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes between placing subsequent layers. The load-bearing capacity of the joint was determined using a splitting tensile strength test on cubic elements. Better performance and lower decrease in bond strength between layers were obtained for samples with mechanically disturbed first layer regardless of the delay time. This method gave similar results to a reference element made without interruption in concreting. It was also noted that the current recommendations and normative guidelines for multilayer casting of self-compacting concrete appear to be insufficient to ensure proper load-bearing capacity between layers.
