Abstract

According to the United Nation estimates, by 2030 about 60% of people worldwide will live in cities. Nevertheless, despite these trends, mankind remains fully dependent on nature. In many cities of the world, the importance of blue-green infrastructure, which offers a wide range of ecosystem services, is growing. Although bluegreen infrastructure is a very good way to counteract climate changes and it is very slowly being introduced to Polish cities. This is favored by the evolving concept of a circularity economy, defined as an economic system aimed at minimizing waste and maximizing the use of resources, including water. Urban spaces, usually covered with paved surfaces, can cause environmental problems both within and outside their boundaries. Hydrologically impermeable large areas contribute to surface runoff, which can lead to soil erosion, deterioration of water quality and the flood risk. The blue-green infrastructure protects local communities from excessive runoff of rainwater and mitigates the effects of drought. Well-situated green areas in the city and proper their developed contribute to the improvement the life quality of the inhabitants and the rank of the urban center. The development of green spaces in the city should take place simultaneously and proportionally with the development of residential buildings. It has been noted that the condition of cities depends on a healthy natural environment, which brings numerous advantages.
