Abstract
The review of development strategies, spatial plans and dedicated programmes in terms of the revitalisation of post-industrial areas in Poland, in particular in the Małopolska (Lesser Poland) Region is the subject of the chapter. The background to this review is the approach to post-mining revitalisation in the Lusatian Basin (Germany). The results show that the Polish system of strategic and planning documents is characterised by an excessive number of studies of a general nature – development strategies, especially at the national level. However, the largest number of planning documents is at the local level. Although they are the most important for the im-plementation of investments, they do not always contain the right arrangements. In contrast, the greatest emphasis in Germany is placed on planning and activities at the level of the region and its parts, and the fact that post-mining areas are taken into account to a much greater extent by outlining the framework for their revita-lisation. There are no dedicated revitalisation programmes in Poland, such as IBA Fürst-Pückler-Land 2000–2010 (30 projects). The analysis of the Spatial Development Plan of the Małopolska Province showed that the revitalisation of post-industrial areas could be a solution to many problems and the implementation of defined objectives. In connection with the above, the authors proposed a solution for the Małopolska Region, consisting in the modification and better coupling of existing strategic, planning and operational documents at the re-gional level. The summary clearly states that the level of the region is appropriate for managing the revitalisation process of post-industrial areas.
