Abstract
The chapter presents the idea of the Tarnów Lakeland as an innovative on the na-tional scale project of revitalisation of flooded sand and gravel pits in the Tarnów subregion. In this project both the mining industry and its legacy is used in combi-nation with natural and cultural resources in a comprehensive manner and based on a far-reaching vision.The method of designing the Tarnów Lakeland based on three scales: subregional, urban and architectural was shown. The assumptions of revitalisation design were presented, namely: coherence means designing complementary functions; maintaining high urban and architectural standards; balancing human, economic and environmental needs; creation of public spaces in peripheral areas; strengthening local identity; promotion of elements of the functioning industry as a tourist attraction; flexibility in terms of programming and space as well as stakeholder participation.The way of creating a tourist product was presented on the example of one of the func-tional complexes of the Tarnów Lakeland – the Water Cultural Park in Dołęga. The thre-ad joining the entire Water Cultural Park is the cultural heritage, including industrial heritage, only seemingly colliding with tourism. The designed cultural structures, in-novative in their architectural form and deeply rooted in the local culture, are to be a distinguishing mark of recreation sites and emphasise their authenticity.
