Abstract
This study is aimed at developing a rational model to monitor the spread of crude oil in aquatic environment and thus facilitate more accurate contingency plans for prevention, recovery, mitigation, containment operations and design of functional oil clean-up equipment. The dispersion model of crude oil in water surface environment was generated from experimental data by using regression analysis. The experiments were done to examine the rate of spread of crude oil in aquatic environment. These experiments yielded a lot of notable results, some of which were applied to examine the rate of spread through graphs that were plotted. The predicted values were compared with the measured values from different locations. Both parameters generated model equations at various volumes of 30 cm(3), 60 cm(3), 90 cm(3), 120 cm(3) & 150 cm(3) respectively. The correlation values r from calibration ranges from r = 0.963 to r = 0.999. This model if applied will predict the rate of spread of crude oil in aquatic environment. The impact and rate of aquatic or marine habitat degradation in most rivers and lakes are of serious concern, especially in developing nations where the level of environmental pollution of crude oil spill is considerably high. This dispersion model will therefore be of immense value in predicting the rate of pollution, determining the mitigation process and evaluating the amount of commensurate compensation to impacted communities and also reduce threat to life in this study area.
