Abstract

To practically implement a fractional-order filter, an integer-order approximation has to be realised as either digital or analog electronic circuits. Several implementation methods exist, each of them revealing different advantages. This paper considers the performance of analog active filters got with two implementation methods. The first filter, created with the Laguerre Impulse Response Approximation, makes use of several cascaded first-order filter sections. The second one uses FosterII RC network to approximate fractional-order capacitors and incorporates them in a low-pass filter structure. Investigation of both filters uses simulations and numerical experiments using SPICE and MATLAB environments. Experiments tested and compared both implementations based on several criteria. Results show their advantages and shortcomings, actual verdict depending on the desired application. © 2019 IEEE.
