Abstract

Anodic polarization of copper in ethanol-water solutions with LiCl leads to formation of microparticles composed of copper compounds. For the anhydrous solution a blue precipitate of Cu-2(OH)(3)Cl is synthesized. In case of low water content spherical Cu2O microparticles are formed with the size slightly increasing with H2O concentration. Needle-like shaped particles of CuO are obtained for water content above 25%. The final product is formed in secondary reactions between particles originating from anodic copper dissolution and water or alcohol decomposition on electrodes. For high water content more hydroxyl groups are obtained on cathode, whereas more aldehyde is formed on anode, when ethanol dominates. The concentration of these intermediate products determines the phase and morphology of the final product.
