Abstract
Energy harvesters of cantilever beam construction and methods of improving its performance are topic of many publications. Among numerous propositions for enhancing energy output or durability of a beam generator is, for example, modification of its general shape or expanding whole system by adding additional masses, springs or dampers. However, at the same time, carrying layer material is often overlooked. Following Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, for given beam deflection, material of carrying layer does not have any influence on piezoelectric layers. Yet, employment of FEM simulation allows to obtain more accurate results which show how actually material of a carrying layer can affect bordering piezoelectric layer. This paper presents results of numerical calculations which assess influence of a carrying layer material, described by a Young modulus and Poisson ratio, on the amount of strain energy and maximum value of stress in piezoelectric layer of a beam harvester. © 2019 IEEE.
