Abstract
The effect of the vacuum suction casting method (VSC) on the microstructure and electrochemical response of the as-cast 2017 aluminium alloy is presented. The VSC method allowed to obtain massive samples with very high cooling rate (102–103 K/s). The microstructure of quick cooled sample has been significantly changed. Finer microstructure of the 2017 aluminium alloy after VSC indicate better corrosion resistance in chlorides. This is related to more homogenous distribution of alloying elements. Standard electrochemical studies using open circuit potential (OCP), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were conducted primarily using global techniques as well as using local technique which employ micro-capillaries.
