Abstract

The construction of a numerical hydrogeological flow model must be preceded by obtaining necessary information. Quantity and reliability of information may extensively impact on the process of model construction and its later calibration, and as a result – the quality and reliability of prognostic calculations. The article deals with sources of data required for a numerical groundwater flow model and it presents various types of data resources. The model is based on a number of overall nature materials, such as topographic maps, map descriptions or scientific publications dealing with the studied area. Other sources include supplementary published specialist resources, mostly thematic maps, cross-sections and descriptions (hydrographic, hydrogeological, climatic, soil, etc.). Other sources of data included in the process of model construction are cyclical measurements of depth to groundwater table, river stage, streamflow and precipitation. In Poland, such type of data are provided by a number of institutions. Topographic materials (maps, databases, NMT) are shared by the Main Centre of Geodetic and Cartographic Documentation. Geological and hydrogeological data are stored in National Geological Archives. Information about precipitation, streamflow and river stage is collected by the Central Hydrological Database and maintained at IMGW-PIB. Part of the data are available in an electronic format through web services, most often free of charge. In some cases, there is a requirement to submit an application form, and/or to make a payment, in order to access the data. © SGEM2017. All Rights Reserved.
