Abstract
This study focuses on petrophysical characteristics of the flysch Krosno Sandstones (Oligocene) from the Jordanów-Limanowa area, located in the western part of the Polish Outer Carpathians (south Poland). This region of the Polish Carpathians is considered to be prospective for unconventional oil and gas exploration. Results of the applied laboratory methods enabled estimation of the crucial geomechanical and petrophysical rocks parameters – Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, mineral composition and brittleness. The analysis of mineralogical composition shows relatively high content of quartz and carbonates (62% on average) and low proportion of clay minerals (26% on average), which discloses high values of calculated brittleness indexes (0,7 on average). The brittle rock-type composition has a good correlation with the Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus. Results of the applied methods, showing the low Poisson’s ratio of rock, its high Young’s modulus together with high brittleness index enabled stating that the examined sandstones exhibit high potential for the hydraulic fracturing, which is a key element of the exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations. © SGEM 2017.
