Abstract

Shale gas and shale oil resources were estimated for the Lower Palaeozoic Baltic and Lublin basins in Poland. The assessment was curried with probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation method, using approach developed by United States Geological Survey. To determine the Assessment units and run the analysis several key geological parameters were studied, such as shale net-pay thickness, total organic carbon contents, thermal maturity, type of kerogen. Estimated Ultimate Recoveries for potential production wells were adopted from US shale gas/oil producing analogues. The analyzed formations were the Caradoc and Lower Silurian shale. In each basin two alternative cases were studied with TOC contents cut-off at 1,5% and at TOC 2%, respectively. For Baltic Basin two assessment units were distinguished, corresponded to the oil and the gas window. Area of Lublin Basin was divided into three units, equivalent to the oil, the liquids and the gas window. Assessed resources for the Baltic Basin with TOC > 2 % amounted 4036 tonnes of oil/km(2) and 31 mln m(3) of natural gas/km(2). For the Lublin Basin with TOC > 1,5 % the shale resources were estimated for 20000 tonnes of oil/km2 and 17,4 mln m3 of natural gas/km2 and for TOC 2% - 26 500 tonnes of oil/km(2) and 6,98 mln m(3) of natural gas/km(2).
